10 Home Remedies for Cold & Cough That Actually Work

Most colds clear up on their own in 7–10 days. But the stuffy nose, sore throat, and that nagging cough can make those days miserable. These remedies won't cure your cold, but they can significantly ease symptoms — and most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen.

1. Turmeric Milk (Haldi Doodh)

The OG Indian immunity drink. Turmeric contains curcumin — a powerful anti-inflammatory compound. Warm milk soothes the throat. Drink one cup before bed.

How: 1 cup warm milk + ½ tsp turmeric + pinch of black pepper + a little honey

2. Ginger + Honey + Lemon Tea

Ginger (zingiber officinale) has proven antiviral properties. Honey coats the throat and has antibacterial effects. Lemon adds vitamin C.

How: Crush 1-inch ginger, boil in water for 5 min, strain, add honey and lemon juice. Drink 2-3 times a day.

3. Steam Inhalation with Ajwain or Eucalyptus

Steam loosens mucus and clears nasal passages. Adding ajwain (carom seeds) or eucalyptus oil enhances the effect.

How: Boil water in a pot, add a handful of ajwain or 3-4 drops eucalyptus oil, lean over with a towel over your head for 10 min.

4. Saltwater Gargle

One of the most clinically supported remedies. Salt water reduces throat inflammation and may kill surface bacteria.

How: ½ tsp salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle for 30 seconds, 3-4 times a day.

5. Tulsi (Holy Basil) Kadha

Tulsi is an adaptogen with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Traditional kadha has been used for centuries — and modern studies back up several of its benefits.

How: Boil 10 tulsi leaves + 4 black peppercorns + 1 tsp ginger + 1 tsp honey in 2 cups water for 10 min. Strain and drink.

6. Mulethi (Licorice Root)

Mulethi is excellent for coughs — it soothes irritated airways and has expectorant properties. Widely available in Indian medical stores.

How: Chew a small piece directly, or boil in water and drink as tea.

7. Sitopaladi Churna

An Ayurvedic formulation of sugar candy, bamboo manna, pippali, cardamom, and cinnamon. Commonly prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors for coughs and respiratory infections.

How: ½ tsp with honey, twice a day. Available at Ayurvedic stores and online.

8. Garlic

Allicin in garlic has antiviral and antibacterial properties. Not the most pleasant cure, but one of the most effective.

How: Crush 2-3 garlic cloves, let sit for 10 min (activates allicin), then eat raw with a little honey or add to warm soup.

9. Clove + Honey

Cloves have eugenol — a natural anesthetic and antiseptic. Great for sore throats and dry coughs.

How: Roast 2-3 cloves, chew slowly. Or mix clove powder with honey and take 1 tsp 2-3 times a day.

10. Sufficient Rest + Fluids

The most underrated remedy. Your immune system works hardest when you're asleep. Drink plenty of warm fluids — soups, herbal teas, warm water. Dehydration worsens every symptom.

How long does a cold last?

Typically 7–10 days. The first 2-3 days are usually the worst. See a doctor if fever exceeds 103°F, symptoms worsen after day 7, or you develop chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Does vitamin C actually help?

The evidence is mixed. Vitamin C doesn't prevent colds, but taking it regularly may slightly reduce duration. Citrus fruits, amla, and guava are excellent natural sources.

When should I take antibiotics?

Common colds are caused by viruses — antibiotics don't work on viruses. Don't take antibiotics unless a doctor has confirmed a bacterial infection (like strep throat or sinusitis).
